Nouns are words for objects like a chair or a desk. Also ideas and places or more abstract things can be a noun.
In the following sentence the word "chair" refers to a noun.
- the chair is strong
If we say "the chair is strong", the word "the" is an article and it is called "definite article" because it refers to a certain chair.
In the sentence:
- a chair is strong
the word "a" refers to just a chair and therefore we call it "indefinite article".
In Dutch there are two forms of the definite article: "de" en "het". For foreigners that can be difficult as there are no rules that determine if it is "de" of "het".
The indefinite article is always: "een"
